Why you may be prescribed HOVILPRI
HOVILPRI may be appropriate for adults who have:
Weakened immune systems
And
And
Oral herpes (HSV-1) or genital herpes (HSV-2) that does not get better with initial treatment prescribed by their healthcare provider
Not actual patient and doctor.
How to take HOVILPRI
HOVILPRI is taken by mouth once a day, with or without food.
To start, you will take 400 mg (4 tablets) by mouth on the first day of your treatment. Then you will take 100 mg (1 tablet) every day after that until your sores, also known as lesions, from HSV infection have healed.
If you miss a dose of HOVILPRI, take it as soon as you remember. If you don’t remember until the next day’s scheduled dose, take 2 tablets at that time.
Before starting treatment
Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including stomach acid–reducing medicines (proton pump inhibitors, such as esomeprazole or rabeprazole, and H2-receptor blockers, such as famotidine and ranitidine) and antacids used for heartburn or indigestion. Some of these medicines may need to be avoided, have their dosage altered, or taken at a different time than HOVILPRI.
How was HOVILPRI studied?
The HOVILPRI clinical study included patients who had:
- Weakened immune systems due to factors such as HIV infection, a hematopoietic cell or solid organ transplant, or long-term treatment with certain medicines that weaken the immune system
- Lesions due to HSV infection that did not improve after at least 7 days of treatment with a first-line class of HSV medications called nucleoside analogues, which include acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir
Eligible patients were randomly placed in 1 of 2 treatment groups
HOVILPRI treatment group
Patients received a starting dose of 400 mg on Day 1, followed by 100 mg taken by mouth once daily starting on Day 2.
Investigator’s choice of treatment
The study healthcare provider selected the treatment that the patient would receive from the following options: intravenous (IV) foscarnet, IV or topical cidofovir, or topical imiquimod.
How was the effectiveness of HOVILPRI measured in the clinical study?
The main goal of the study was to determine complete healing of HSV lesions, and no new lesions, up to Day 28 of treatment.
Results with HOVILPRI
Nearly twice as many patients who received HOVILPRI had their HSV lesions completely heal compared with patients who received other treatments chosen by their study healthcare provider.

Frequently asked questions
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) can cause painful lesions on the mouth, lips, genitals, or other areas of the body. For many people, standard antiviral medicines can help control the infection.
Refractory HSV means the lesions do not improve, or even worsen, after initial treatment prescribed by a healthcare provider. If you feel your symptoms are not improving, please talk with your healthcare provider.
Resistant HSV infections can be determined through additional testing by a healthcare provider; however, testing is not required to be prescribed HOVILPRI.
- Lesions are not improving
- Lesions getting worse
- New lesions are appearing despite treatment
Talk with your healthcare provider if symptoms are not improving.
HOVILPRI works differently than other treatments by impacting the replication process of HSV.
Yes, there is no cure for HSV. Even after lesions have completely healed, the virus remains in the body for life and lesions may reappear at any time. These flare-ups are called recurrences, and they are more likely to happen in people with weakened immune systems.
Your healthcare provider will work with you to determine a treatment plan that is right for you, including if you will need follow-up visits to assess progress, and answer questions.
Talk with your healthcare provider about whether HOVILPRI is right for you. If you are prescribed HOVILPRI, HOVILPRI Horizons may provide support, including help with insurance coverage, coordination with your pharmacy, and more.
